Peanut Butter Balls are unique because they are simple to make but taste like something you’d have at a fancy chocolate shop.
Today, I will be presenting you with one of those favorite peanut butter and chocolate snacks.
Often called buckeyes, chocolate buckeyes, or simply, as is written in the title, peanut butter balls this no-bake snack with a few ingredients, minimal tools, and cooking time will become a household favorite.
Your Peanut Butter Balls Recipe
- Peanut Butter: For this recipe we will be using smooth peanut butter. Although some recipes use crunchy peanut butter, smooth peanut butter will create the best experience for beginners.
- Crushed Rice Crispy: The purpose of the crushed Rice Crispy is to give it a more decadent consistency. You can substitute this for corn flakes, oats, or coconut flour.
- Melting Chocolate: White, milk, and dark chocolate each work perfectly with this recipe. Choose your favorite kind of chocolate or make an assortment of peanut butter balls. (We recommend Ghirardelli melting chocolate wafers.)
- Toppings: This is optional, but adding crushed Oreo, sprinkles, coconut flakes, and chopped nuts is a great way to add a variety of flavor and to make it more festive for the occasion. You can also get colored melted chocolate and decorate for Christmas, Valentine’s, and Easter themes.

Serving Size: 40 peanut butter balls
- Peanut Butter 1 jar or 1 ½ cups
- Powdered Sugar 2 cups
- Salted Butter 2 tbs
- Crushed Rice Crispy 1 ½ cups (measured out and then crushed)
- Melting Chocolate 2 cups
- Toppings about 1 cup (Optional)
- Two 9-inch round cake pans
- Rolling pin
- 1-gallon resealable plastic bag
- Wax paper
- Large bowl
- Medium bowl
- Hand mixer or whisk
- Fork and knife or toothpick(s)
- Place cereal in a resealable plastic bag and crush thoroughly with rolling in; if using oatmeal, place it in a blender until it becomes a flour-like consistency.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the peanut butter and butter together with a hand mixer.
- Slowly add the powdered sugar until well combined.
- Line a large cookie sheet with wax paper.
- Scoop a teaspoon of the peanut butter mixture, roll it into a ball with your hands, and place it on the cookie sheet. Make sure to give them enough space for the chocolate dipping later; otherwise, they may stick together.
- Continue until you finish the batter.
- Refrigerate for 20 minutes until hardened.
- In a medium microwave-safe bowl, melt your preferred chocolate for 30 seconds. If not wholly melted, stir and add for an additional 10 seconds. Repeat as necessary. (Refer to package directions for melting instructions as well.)
- Remove the peanut butter balls from the refrigerator and then cover them in chocolate.
- Chocolate dipping options:
1) Use a toothpick to dip each ball into the chocolate. If you are going for a traditional buckeye look, you can leave a small portion at the top without chocolate to create the buckeye’s eye.
2) Drop the peanut butter balls into the bowl of melted chocolate and roll them using a fork until they are completely covered. Then remove them from the chocolate using the fork and a knife to slide them onto the cookie sheet. (Option 2 is better for decorating purposes.)
- Chocolate dipping options:
- Once placed onto the sheet, while the chocolate is still wet, top it with sprinkles or crushed cookies or nuts. If you want to decorate them with colored chocolate, let them harden first so that your decorations don’t smear.
- Once decorated, or if you skipped step 8, let them harden and leave them in the fridge for a few minutes before moving onto a decorative display, into gift bags, or storing them in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 5 months.
Remember to keep the gift bags refrigerated.
This recipe is excellent for getting the family involved as it requires no sharp object or ingredients that could hurt the final product if miscalculated.
The ingredients and tools are simple, and after a couple of batches, you will find your little signature style of peanut butter balls.
